Norn is a modified Santa Cruz 27 with an open transom and high-aspect rudder, a regular on Puget Sound race courses, and a former holder of the Seattle–Port Townsend Dash record.

Originally built for serious coastal and offshore racing, SC27s have a track record of durability and seaworthiness that make them well-suited for a long, engineless passage like R2AK.
